The 2 sociological factors which have had a profound impact on the development of Greek libraries are the slow reconstruction after 4 centuries of Turkish domination and the ever present influence of politics. At present there appears to be a centralised collection of books with a decentralised distribution of libraries. Describes the organisation and operations of the public libraries which encompass 3 basic types, county, municipal and children's and examines public attitudes towards librarians and the public perception and legal status of libraries. Future planning includes proposals for library education at University level.
