It is widely recognized that developing an ontology is a strenuous and time consuming task. Dif- ferent methodologies have been developed by di erent research groups in an attempt to provide to ontology developers a clear understanding of how to build an ontology. In addition, a variety of languages for representing and tools for editing ontologies have been developed to support the implementation of these methodologies in speci c environments. In this presentation, an overview of the main methodologies, tools and languages used for building an ontology, that have been reported in the literature, as well as main relationships among them will be brie y presented. The existing technology is mature enough to support the development of ontologies given the variety of methodologies, tools and languages that are already available. It will be argued that a common methodology is needed to provide support to ontology developers for performing tasks such as ontology development, exchange, evaluation, evolution and management. Likewise, the development and management of multilingual ontologies should be based on a common and widely accepted methodology.en
