Hellenic Economic Library Network (H.E.LI.N.): A partnership against the economic crisis

The Hellenic Economic Library Network (H.E.LI.N.) was established in 2012 as a result of the cooperation among libraries providing resources and information services in the field of economics. Currently, the network includes ten libraries in the public and private sectors: three public universities, the Ministry of Economics and Development, the Bank of Greece, three private banks, and two public institutions. This is the challenge of the Network: the diversity of its organizations. The idea on the networking was born in the context of the economic crisis and the efforts of libraries to enlarge knowledge resources while minimizing funding. The principal objective of its members was to establish a partnership for sharing knowledge, ideas, best practices and resources in order to continue offering value-added services to their users’ communities despite the difficult economic conditions in Greece. The H.E.LI.N. Network operates under a horizontal administrative scheme with no financial contribution from its members while all the staff work on a voluntary base. Although the participating libraries come from diverse organizational structures, private and public institutions, they manage to create a strong collaborative network which provides interlibrary loan facilities, organizes meetings, conferences, lectures, informative and educational materials, book presentations, etc., concerning the socioeconomic and financial sciences targeted to approach the users of economic libraries or the general public. H.E.LI.N. is a dialogue for change and action! The purpose of this paper is to present the Network’s current actions and to highlight the impact of its activity on both information professionals and library users. Moreover, as the network supports synergies, it is open to discuss further cooperation with other networks worldwide.

This presentation was presented as part of the panel 'What role can RDA/RDF play in the transition to linked library data?'. The panel was moderated by Crystal Clements, Theodore Gerontakos (University of Washington Libraries). The slides include the presenter's answer to the following question: RDA has been painstakingly aligned with the LRM; BIBFRAME has not. One of the most talked-about areas of concern is the absence of an expression entity in BIBFRAME. Could this, or other incompatibilities between RDA and BIBFRAME, have significant impacts?

Cooperation as a policy factor for strategic development of a geographical collection: the case of Greek academic libraries
Vardakosta, Ifigenia
Policies implementation has always affected Map/GIS libraries. Those policies
influence their operation and determine the type and level of the provided services.
The conduction of a collaborative partnership among libraries can considered as a
policy action, a characteristic that indicates their dynamic nature. Recently, the global
financial crisis engaged libraries to develop synergies in order to achieve benefits for
their users.
Although Greek libraries have significant geographical collections, of both
contemporary and cultural heritage maps, the public and private sectors create and
publish large sets of geospatial data, the patrons finds difficulties in accessing and
using the appropriate material. Surveys, in particular, highlight the discomfort of
geographical information users about the collections and services offered by libraries.
Meanwhile, librarians in Greece appear to be unable to adequately guide their users to
the proper geographical sources and tools to process the geographical data they need.
This paper, points out the importance of collaborations towards an organized
development of geographical collections using as a case study the Greek academic
libraries.
More specifically, there are academic libraries that serve departments where
geographic information is an essential component of the educational and research
process. Those particular libraries have built coordinated collaborative efforts
regarding the organization, development and dissemination of their collections. The
aforementioned collaborations displayed in the present study. Additionally, the paper
will present the main purpose of the collaboration movement, the basic principles that
underpin it, the achievements that the members managed to succeed and its future
activities.
