Children's book production has expanded during the last 15 years. Since 1983 the Centre for Children's and Teenage Books has developed a network of 24 children's libraries in rural areas, assisted by French librarian Anne Gruner Schlumberger. The centre, with multi-lingual stocks of 8,000 media units, coordinates and advises these libraries, organises conferences and advanced training and develops contacts with authors and publishers. Since 1985 lycees and gymnasia have been legally obliged to provide school libraries. Most secondary schools, therefore, have school libraries but their standards vary. 00 Original abstract--amended.en
