Outlines the Greek educational system and the evolution of academic libraries and examines several individual library systems. Central library systems were not traditional for Greek universities and are only encountered in a few of the newer institutions today. The decentralised system has forced the small departmental libraries to become autonomous and independent, and has led to unnecessary duplication of many facets of the library process. Because of a lack of properly educated and trained personnel, little or no reference service exists, few institutions have collection development policies and there is a lack of understanding of the needs of students to borrow materials.
