Integrated search tools for newspaper digital libraries

Abstract

Reports on a project designed to create a digital library of newspaper issues dated since 1890. All source material is the property of Lambrakis Press SA, the largest publisher inGreece, and exceeds 1.2 million pages, half of which are of A2 size. Describes a retroconversion procedure developed to facilitate access to the digitized material, noting that temporarily, the full text of articles is only partially available. Focuses on describing the search tools utilized by the system, which support users with different methods of searching and different levels of sophistication, and which also provide simple ways for users to express their information need and to view results.
